Lithium Batteries
Lithium Batteries are more efficient than
Lead Acid Batteries, Longer lasting, Lighter Weight, Lower Maintenance.
Even though the cycle life is good, the cycle life is still
best when charged to about 90% or 98% full and only discharged to 20% or
better to 50% and kept under 100 degrees. Charging and discharging the full
range will reduce the cycle life. For best overall performance, try not to
undersize the battery bank. Batteries have a 10-20 year design life,
Built-in Battery Management
System (BMS) with voltage, current, temperature, and health
management. Lithium batteries should not be subjected to periodic higher
voltage equalizing charge like most lead acid batteries require. To protect the BMS in Lithium Batteries from lightning or EMP
damage, please use the 24 volt DC or 48 volt DC EMP Shield listed on our EMP
Shielding page. These batteries use Lithium Ferrous Phosphate cells
(LiFePo4) A+ Tier One. They are safe from thermal runaway and should not catch
fire like Lithium Ion cells.

Lead Acid Batteries
Car batteries will
not last as long as Deep Cycle batteries. They are made for high current
used for a short time when starting an engine. RV/Marine batteries are a
little better than car batteries but not as good as golf car batteries. Deep
discharges will shorten battery life. For best battery life, use shallow
discharges of 20% or less and routinely stay above 50%. Comparing depth of
discharge to cycle life of a battery routinely discharged 80%, a battery
discharged only 50% would have about double the cycle life and discharged
20% about triple the cycle life. |

Golf Cart

These electric vehicle batteries are a good first battery to
learn on. They are mass produced so they have the lowest cost per amp hour. Life
is about 4-8 years if not abused. They are 6 volt, so two are connected in
series (positive of first battery to negative of second battery) to provide 12
volts and 4 are connected in series for 24 volts; 6 are series connected for 36
volts and 8 are series connected for 48 volts. Each battery is 220 amp hours
(AH). Batteries (or battery sets) connected in parallel keep voltage the same but add the amp
hours thus increasing storage capacity. Two 12 volt sets connected in parallel (4
batteries) would have 440 AH and three sets would have 660 AH. 10.25 x7 x10.25 high, 66 lbs. You may be
able to find these locally for about $80 to $130 each.
L16 size
Rolls/Surrette Larger, heavier and longer life than golf cart
batteries. Amp Hours listed are for 20 hour rate. The 100 hour rate is about 30%
more Amp Hours. Warranty is 2 years full; next 5 years pro-rated.
Batteries with a cycle life of 1750 cycles to 80% depth of discharge are
available in 6 volt at 357 Amp Hours and 2 volt at 1000 to 1445 Amp Hours.

Industrial Batteries
These high quality batteries can last 10-20 years with proper
care. Higher initial cost but may cost less in the long run. Taller cells use
less floor space, fewer cells means less caps to open for inspection and
watering. Increased liquid reserve means less maintenance. Designed to offer up
to a 20 year lifetime, 3000 plus cycles to 50% depth of discharge, 2100 cycles
to 80% depth of discharge. Amp Hours listed are for 20 hour rate. The 100 hour
rate is about 40% more Amp Hours.
Surrette/Rolls batteries have a durable
double container construction (except 2 volt Single cell) for a cleaner battery.
Individual cells can be unbolted allowing for a lighter handling of battery.
Each cell is assembled in its
owner inner container made of high temperature retardant, durable polypropylene
with the inner cover heat bonded to the container, (thus acid leakage is
eliminated). The outer container is high density tough polyethylene with a
removable lid. Even if the outer container were to break the battery would still
be operable without the harmful affects of sulfuric acid spills.
Warranty is 3 years full, 7 years pro-rated. Specify WET or DRY. Dry charged
batteries cost 10% more.
Shipping discount for more than 1000 pounds east of the Mississippi or 2000

It is desirable to have
backup way of charging when batteries are low and little power is coming from
your solar modules or wind generator. Using a high amperage charger will
minimize engine generator run time, saving fuel and maintenance. Standard
